Emotional Rescue is one of the flush-decked E boats, rather than a model with a coach roof. She does not currently have a full set of sails - she is missing a storm jib. Since purchasing the boat, my biggest investment to date has been to buy a Mercury 4hp Sailpower outboard. So far the expense seems justified as the engine has proved reliable, with ample power and reverse gear for tight situations. I have needed to re-locate the mounting bracket further down the transom. Before I did this the outboard would be dangerously close to lifting out of the water when crew weight went forward.
When I acquired the boat there were several layers of flaking antifoul on the bottom, which I removed, with the help of my Dad's electric chisel. This was a very unpleasant job indeed, as it involved (usually) lying under the hull testing stamina by holding a vibrating power tool with my arms stretched out above my head. I was forced to wear goggles and a mask to avoid ingesting to much of the antifoul flakes, but the goggles would steam up in a matter of seconds. After this experience the eroding antifoul seemed worth the extra money! The hull is now in good condition.
I have so far made a couple of weekend trips and have spent a lot of time trying to get the boat right. I am now vowing to go away every weekend, because I'm wasting the summer! So far I have been reasonably impressed with the performance. Being a multihull sailor until now, I am having to get used to the boat heeling so much!
